UofL students, faculty to address healthcareneeds in eastern KY

This will take place in Pikeville, KY, and is part of the RAM (Remote Area Medical) mission; RAM is a non-profit volunteer corps dedicated to providing free health care, dental care, eye care and technical and educational assistance to people in impoverished and rural regions -- many of which are in the US.

About 100 public health professionals with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps will also help staff the clinics. This will serve as a training exercise for the Corps.

-This 2-day event will represent a microcosm of the crisis in the U.S. with regard to the uninsured and underinsured population and their need for, and access to, health care

-Types of care provided will include: tooth extractions, fillings & cleanings; screenings for cholesterol, diabetes & cardiovascular disease; breast, cervical & prostate exams; a variety of health education including diabetes management; autism screenings; cancer screenings; eye exams & eye glasses

-There will be incredible personal stories of struggle

-Though the team will endeavor to treat as many people as possible, there may be those who are turned away at the end of the weekend -- that this health care crisis is happening right here in the U.S. is a story that needs to be told
