Remmel named chair of neurology at UofL

Kerri Remmel, M.D., Ph.D., is the new chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Remmel has served as interim chair since March.

“Kerri is a national leader utilizing a multidisciplinary care model in the treatment of stroke victims,” said Toni Ganzel, M.D., MBA, dean of the UofL School of Medicine. “She is an innovator in how we deliver health care to people and a tremendous role model for our future generations of health care providers.”

Remmel joined the faculty at UofL in 2000. In 2002 she was named director of the Stroke Center at University of Louisville Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health.

The center is the first and only Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Kentucky and the 20th in the United States.

While leading the Stroke Center, Remmel also has served in a variety of administrative roles within the department and the school of medicine including chief of the Division of Vascular Neurology and vice chair for clinical services. She also served as associate dean for clinical development and regionalization, which encompassed the development of a statewide clinical network for increased access to medical care using telemedicine and protocols for improved systems of care for rural Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

Remmel earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech-language pathology as well as her doctorate in Communication Disorders and Linguistics from Louisiana State University. After serving on the faculty of the Speech-language Pathology program at Northeast Louisiana University and owning her own Speech-language Pathology private practice, Remmel earned her medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She completed her residency in neurology at the University of Louisville, serving as chief resident her final year.
